The present book contains the Proceedings of a two day Symposium on Uremic Toxins organized at the University of Ghent in Belgium. A series of guest lectures, free communications and posters have been presented. An international audience of 163 scientists from 16 nationalities listened to and discussed extensively a spectrum of topics brought forward by colleagues and researchers who worked for many years in the field of Uremic Toxins. There is a striking contrast between all the new dialysis strategies available in the work to "clean" the uremic patients and the almost non-progression of our knowledge on uremic toxins in the past decade. In this sense the symposium was felt by all participants as a new start for the research in the biochemical field of the definition of uremia. If the present volume would stimulate new work in this field in order to define uremia, or identify the uremic toxins, the purpose of the organizers would be maximally fulfilled.

This volume provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of the pathogenesis, treatment and treatment effects of chronic anaemia of cancer as well as chemotherapy- and radiotherapy-induced anaemia. It is the result of a joint effort by the members of the European School of Oncology (ESO) Task Force on Anaemia in Cancer and the participants of an ESO Symposium on this topic. negative prognostic factor for clinical outcome in cancer patients. In addition, there is evidence that tissue hypoxia contributes to the progression of malignant disease by inducing a more malignant phenotype, stimulating angiogenesis within tumour tissues, and diminishing the sensitivity of tumour cells to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. traditional treatment for anaemia - the transfusion of red blood cells - has significant limitations. This situation has changed dramatically with the introduction of recombinant human erythropoietin, which acts as an important physiological stimulator of human erythropoiesis. The beneficial effects of erythropoietin markedly exceed those of transfusions. Erythropoietin can lead to complete, long-term normalization of anaemia which in turn results in a significant improvement in anaemic cancer patients' quality of life and physical exercise capacity.

According to some reports, about half of all adults and children have one or more chronic health conditions. One in four adults has two or more chronic health conditions. And, sadly, these numbers continue to grow at an alarming rate. The Holistic Rx offers the reader with one or more chronic health conditions or symptoms easy-to-follow evidence-based approaches to healing their ailments by targeting inflammation and its underlying root causes. Dr. Madiha Saeed covers the foundations of good health like digestive health and detoxification, and the Four Big S’s (stress management, sleep strategies, social and spiritual health), along with disease-specific supplements homeopathy, acupressure, aromatherapy, , other holistic remedies to achieve lasting good health and wellness. The first part of the book addresses the root of chronic illness—inflammation—and examines its underlying causes and possible treatment approaches that focus on the whole body rather than just the affected area. In the second part of the book, she first advises the reader on adjusting their holistic approach to their health conditions based on their individual needs. Then, after briefly describing various integrative approaches, she provides an A-to-Z guide to holistic and integrative treatment of over 70 chronic illnesses, conditions, and symptoms. For each condition, she outlines a healing plan that begins with digestive health and detoxifications and the four S’s specific to that organ system and covers the additional alternative, holistic, and complementary approaches that are most effective for that condition. This ready resource will help the whole family address their most common complaints and promotes a healthy, balanced lifestyle that focuses on overall wellness.

Anemia in the elderly has been properly defined as the silent epidemic, representing 3 million people in the United States aged 65 years and older. Incidence and prevalence of this condition increase with age. It differs in its etiology, pathogenesis and treatment from anemia in children and younger adults. Anemia is associated with reduced survival, increased risk of functional dependence and hospitalization, increased risk of congestive heart failure and stage renal disease and cognitive disorders. Approximately 70% of anemia in older individuals is reversible.

Despi te a slow decrease in the incidence of peptic ulcer in the Western world during the past decade, general practitioners, physicians, gastroenterologists, and surgeons deal with patients suffering from peptic ulcer and its complications almost daily. It has been estimated that some 10% of the population in the Western world becomes af flicted by peptic ulcer at least once and many of them have chronic relapsing disease. This lays a heavy burden on the amount of money which is spent in general health care. In recent years our understanding of peptic ulcer disease has in creased tremendously, but considerable gaps in our knowledge remain. Originally the increase in our knowledge has been stimulated by the development of fibre-optic endoscopy in the sixties, and later by the development of new surgical techniques and drugs in the seventies. New insights into the pathophysiology of the disease resulted from these developments and revived the scientific interest in peptic ulcer disease. However, the field remains complicated and the studies are be devilled by the large number of variables which can affect the results. In the symposium 'PEPTIC ULCER TODAY' we have attemp ted to bring together recent knowledge on basic and clinical aspects of peptic ulcer disease.
