This collection of reprinted 'Featured Reviews' published in Mathematical Reviews (MR) in 1995 and 1996 makes widely available informed reviews of some of the best mathematics published recently. 'Featured Reviews' were introduced in MR at the beginning of 1995 in part to provide some guidance to the current research-level literature. With the exponential growth of publications in mathematical research in the first half-century of MR, it had become essentially impossible for users of MR to identify the most important new research-level books and papers, especially in fields outside of the users' own expertise. This work identifies some of the "best" new publications, papers, and books that are expected to have a significant impact on the area of pure or applied mathematics with which researchers are concerned. All of the papers reviewed here contain interesting new ideas or applications, a deep synthesis of existing ideas, or any combination of these. The volume is intended to lead the user to important new research across all fields covered by MR.

This second volume of Featured Reviews makes available special detailed reviews of some of the most important mathematical articles and books published from 1997 through 1999. Also included are excellent reviews of several classic books and articles published prior to 1970. Among those reviews, for example, are the following: Homological Algebra by Henri Cartan and Samuel Eilenberg, reviewed by G. Hochschild; Faisceaux algebriques coherents by Jean-Pierre Serre, reviewed by C. Chevalley; and On the Theory of General Partial Differential Operators by Lars Hormander, reviewed by J. L. Lions. In particular, those seeking information on current developments outside their own area of expertise will find the volume very useful. By identifying some of the best publications, papers, and books that have had or are expected to have a significant impact in applied and pure mathematics, this volume will serve as a comprehensive guide to important new research across all fields covered by MR.

Andrzej Mostowski was one of the leading 20th century logicians. His legacy is examined in this volume of papers devoted both to his extraordinary scientific heritage and to the memory of him as a great researcher, teacher, organizer of science and person. Professor Mostowski pioneered and mastered many areas of mathematical logic. His contributions spanned set theory, recursion theory, and model theory - the backbone of the foundations of mathematics. The complete detailed bibliography of Mostowski's writings is included. For many years after WWII and especially in the late sixties and until his untimely death in 1975, Warsaw, where he led the centre of foundational studies, was a place where many leading logicians visited, studied, and started their career. Their memories form an important part of this volume, attempting to bring back the extraordinary achievements and personality of Mostowski.

Applied mathematics connects the mathematical theory to the reality by solving real world problems and shows the power of the science of mathematics, greatly improving our lives. Therefore it plays a very active and central role in the scientific world. This volume contains 14 high quality survey articles — incorporating original results and describing the main research activities of contemporary applied mathematics — written by top people in the field. The articles have been written in review style, so that the researcher can have a quick and thorough view of what is happening in the main subfields of applied mathematics. Contents:Two Contemporary Computational Concepts in Numerical Analysis (I K Argyros)On the Simultaneous Approximation of Functions and Their Derivatives (T Kilgore)Copositive Polynomial Approximation Revisited (Y K Hu & X M Yu)Sampling Theory and Function Spaces (H-J Schmeisser & W Sickel)Evaluating Statistical Functionals by Means of Projections onto Convex Cones in Hilbert Spaces: Part I and II (T Rychlik)Extrapolation: From Calculation of π to Finite Element Method of Partial Differential Equations (X-P Shen)A Survey on Scaling Function Interpolation and Approximation (E-B Lin)and other papers Readership: Applied mathematicians, statisticians, economists and engineers. Use of Mathematical Literature discusses the bibliographic concerns of mathematical literature. The book is comprised of 14 chapters that cover characteristics of mathematical literature and provide reviews of some of the major literature in various mathematical fields. The text first discusses the role of the literature in mathematics, and then proceeds to tackling major organizations, journals, and reference materials. Next, the book provides critical accounts of the major literature in various mathematical fields, such as combinatorics, topology, and mathematical programming. The book will be of great use to students, practitioners, and researchers of mathematics. Other profession handling math literature, such as teachers, librarians, and translators will also find this book invaluable.

This is the most comprehensive survey of the mathematical life of the legendary Paul Erdős (1913-1996), one of the most versatile and prolific mathematicians of our time. For the first time, all the main areas of Erdős' research are covered in a single project. Because of overwhelming response from the mathematical community, the project now occupies over 1000 pages, arranged into two volumes. These volumes contain both high level research articles as well as key articles that survey some of the cornerstones of Erdős' work, each written by a leading world specialist in the field. A special chapter "Early Days", rare photographs, and art related to Erdős complement this striking collection. A unique contribution is the bibliography on Erdős' publications: the most comprehensive ever published. This new edition, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Paul Erdős' birth, contains updates on many of the articles from the two volumes of the first edition, several new articles from prominent mathematicians, a new introduction, and more biographical information about Paul Erdős with an updated list of publications. The second volume contains chapters on graph theory and combinatorics, extremal and Ramsey theory, and a section on infinity that covers Erdős' research on set theory. All of these chapters are essentially updated, particularly the extremal theory chapter that contains a survey of flag algebras, a new technique for solving extremal problems.

Paul Halmos will celebrate his 75th birthday on the 3rd of March 1991. This volume, from colleagues, is an expression of affection for the man and respect for his contributions as scholar, writer, and teacher. It contains articles about Paul, about the times in which he worked and the places he has been, and about mathematics. Paul has furthered his profession in many ways and this collection reflects that diversity. Articles about Paul are not biographical, but rather tell about his ideas, his philosophy, and his style. Articles about the times and places in which Paul has worked describe people, events, and ways in which Paul has influenced students and colleagues over the past 50 years. Articles about mathematics are about all kinds of mathematics, including operator theory and Paul's research in the subject. This volume represents a slice of mathematical life and it shows how many parts of mathematics Paul has touched. It is fitting that this volume has been produced with the support and cooperation of Springer-Verlag. For over 35 years, Paul has contributed to mathematics publishing as founder and editor of many outstanding series.
