Let's say you're a typical low-paid working stiff. You've sailed small boats all your life, you've saved a little money--you're finally ready for a real cruising boat. You drop in on Tadd, your friendly neighborhood yacht broker, who is more than happy to sell you that brand-new Trickledown 32 for only $90,000, plus a few optional extras like anchors, sails, cushions, a compass, instruments--stuff like that; say, $115,000 ready to sail. "One hundred and fifteen thousand . . . dollars?" "Not to worry," says Tadd. "Only 20% down and 10 years of easy payments and you're off into the sunset. Let's see, that's $23,000 down and, at 10% interest, only $1,215.79 per month--plus insurance of course. Send me a postcard from Tahiti." "How much per month? That's half my salary! Don't you have anything in my price range?" Tadd glances conspicuously at his Rolex, sighing, and points to a characterless Clorox jog with a spindly mast--a hyperthyroid daysailer with bunks for the seven dwarfs; NOT what you had in mind! And then you see it, in the back of the yard, varnish hanging in strips off weather-beaten trim, rigging frayed, sails ripped and stained, dank interior with dangling wires and scurrying anonymous inhabitants. But underneath all the squalor you see the lines of a real cruising boat--a sturdy hull with a sprightly sheer from the pen of a Philip Rhodes or a Tom Gillmer--a fiberglass boat built back when craftsmanship still meant something. You remember when you bought your house--it looked a lot like this boat, and you and your all-thumbs husband managed to breathe life into it over time, painting, papering, spackling--lots of spackling. This boat has possibilities. "How much?" you ask. "You're kidding, right?" says Tadd, flicking a bit of cobweb from his spotless Breton Reds. "Take it for, say, $8,000?" Sold. Well, now you've got it home, but Bob and Norm aren't there every weekend to help guide you through this restoration. Where to turn? Turn to This Old Boat. Don Casey, co-author of Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach, assumes you know nothing--not even how to use tools--and leads you methodically and good-naturedly through every step of turning a cast-off fiberglass boat into a real show-stopper, including the simplest and most comlete explanation yet of sailmaking--the sailor's darkest and most expensive art. Casey's step-by-step drawings guide you through a simple project--laying up a fiberglass instrument case, for example--then show you how to apply those skills to something more ambitious--like building a new hatch. With this book and the best buyer's market in boating history, you can send Tadd that postcard from Tahiti--and have money to spare. Can't afford that brand-new boat? Take advantage of the best buyer's market in boating history. Turn a rundown production boat into a first-class yacht with This Old Boat. Whether you are skilled or unskilled, whether you like sail or powerboats, here is everything you need to: Find the right boat at the right price Map out a logical, affordable renovation plan Work with fiberglass--everything from minor cosmetics to major structural repairs Renovate rigging, winches, engines, and other mechanical systems Work with wood, canvas, and plastic Change the interior from a cramped, dingy dormitory to a light, spacious livable home Repair and modernize the electrical, plumbing, and refrigeration systems Add a stunning, mirror-like finish Make your own dodgers, sail covers, and SAILS--and much more! "Casey's intelligent, practical advice covers just about everything, and his style is just what the doctor ordered for anyone daft enough to want to fix up an old boat."--Southern Boating "A great book for anyone on the water."--Maine Coastal News

The Anarchist Cookbook will shock, it will disturb, it will provoke. It places in historical perspective an era when "Turn on, Burn down, Blow up" are revolutionary slogans of the day. Says the author" "This book... is not written for the members of fringe political groups, such as the Weatherman, or The Minutemen. Those radical groups don't need this book. They already know everything that's in here. If the real people of America, the silent majority, are going to survive, they must educate themselves. That is the purpose of this book." In what the author considers a survival guide, there is explicit information on the uses and effects of drugs, ranging from pot to heroin to peanuts. There i detailed advice concerning electronics, sabotage, and surveillance, with data on everything from bugs to scramblers. Using the most well-studied behavioral analyses of animal subjects to promote a better understanding of the effects of disease and the effects of new therapeutic treatments on human cognition, Methods of Behavior Analysis in Neuroscience provides a reference manual for molecular and cellular research scientists in both academia and the pharmaceutical industry. The materials presented draw from the scholarly works of recognized experts in several fields of cognitive and behavioral neuroscience. Each contributor describes the most frequently used and most widely accepted version of the model, and each chapter includes: (1) a well-referenced introduction that covers the theory behind and the utility of the model; (2) a detailed and step-by-step methodology; and (3) an approach to the interpretation of the data presented. Many chapters also provide examples of actual experiments that use the method. This text eliminates the guesswork from the process of designing the methodology for many of the animal behavioral models that are used to study brain disorders, drug abuse, toxicology, and cognitive drug development. It will also significantly reduce the time spent assessing literature and developing models for studying animal subjects. Overall, Methods of Behavioral Analysis in Neuroscience is an invaluable reference source for the professional who seeks to comprehend the effects of disease on human cognition.

The delimitation of maritime zones is an important requirement for peaceful relations between neighbouring States. There are numerous examples of areas between States with opposite or adjacent coasts where sovereignty over an island or territory may not be contested but the delimitation of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zone is still pending. Under the Law of the Sea Convention, the delimitation of these zones shall be effected by agreement on the basis of international law. However, the Convention does not offer a definitive answer as to the methods that should be applied. This publication includes contributions by Judges of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, eminent scholars and experienced practitioners. The papers deal with various aspects of maritime delimitation: the jurisprudence of international courts and tribunals and their relevance for delimitation, the impact of the Law of the Sea Convention, the role of legal practitioners and diplomatic negotiators, and delimitation under particular geological circumstances and in geographically complex regional situations. It is designed to provide insight and guidance to the complicated process of maritime delimitation.

As of May 2013, 93 children previously diagnosed with regressive autism were able to shed their autism diagnosis, their symptoms, and return to an overall state of health and vitality using the protocols revealed in this book. Kerri Rivera has outlined a very complete approach to autism recovery that includes an understanding of the importance of Biofilm theory and protocol. She recommends safe interventions that do no harm, and are helping to confront a growing epidemic. Kerri Rivera's approach includes common sense dietary recommendations, the use of supplements to restore balance to the body and immune system, as well as mild oxidative therapies to address chronic infection and inflammation. She has taken children who were in the throes of autism (meaning chronic illness) to healing. The symptoms being labeled as autism are fading away, the children are talking and socializing, and their ATEC scores prove beyond a shadow of a doubt what their parents are claiming: their children no longer have autism. Kerri Rivera's grasp of a biomedical approach to Autism recovery, paired with her passion for service has allowed families of all socioeconomic backgrounds to have what they might never have otherwise found: a means by which to help their children. This book contains over 120 testimonials from parents (and some of the children themselves) describing their journey and resulting success.

The technologies required to minimize such impacts are discussed here in an in-depth overview and review of a broad spectrum of energy and environmental issues. The first five sections of the book deal directly with scientific and technological topics: the production, transportation, and utilization of electric power; thermal science and engineering for energy conservation/utilization processes; gas hydrates; multiphase mechanics for energy and environmental technology; pollutants and radioactive wastes in the earth. The sixth section, unique in a book of this type, focuses on education, recording a panel discussion on solutions to problems of energy and environment. For specialists and nonspecialists alike, the book is thus a valuable guide to the technological challenges for the future.

A unique and outstanding military and industrial achievement, the Collins class submarine project was also plagued with difficulties and mired in politics. Its story is one of heroes and villains, grand passions, intrigue, lies, spies and backstabbing. It is as well a story of enormous commitment and resolve to achieve what many thought impossible. The building of these submarines was Australia's largest, most expensive and most controversial military project. From initiation in the 1981–2 budget to the delivery of the last submarine in 2003, the total cost was in excess of six billion dollars. Over 130 key players were interviewed for this book, and the Australian Defence Department allowed access to its classified archives and the Australian Navy archives. Vividly illustrated with photographs from the collections of the Royal Australian Navy and ASC Pty Ltd, The Collins Class Submarine Story: Steel, Spies and Spin, first published in 2008, is a riveting and accessibly written chronicle of a grand-scale quest for excellence.

Sensitive Objects

Affect and Material Culture

Author: Jonas Frykman,Maja Povrzanović Frykman

Publisher: Nordic Academic Press

Some objects stand out as personal and important to us. A packed suitcase, an inherited vase, the remains from a humanitarian aid packet – things can be stored with affects. In Sensitive Objects the authors focus on material culture and on practice – on what affect does. Some of them place the issue of sensitivity in a wider frame of professional interest in innovation and culture-tourism. The volume is a contribution to the upcoming field of ‘affect research’ that has so far has been mainly explored in psychology and cultural studies. In their texts ethnologists and anthropologists involved show how established ways of analysing culture benefit from achievements in this field. They use fieldwork to examine how people project affects onto material objects and explore how objects trigger affect. The editors hope that this book will be read across disciplines, not only to promote the value of ethnographic work, but also to incite further theoretically informed creative empirical approaches to affects and material culture.
