The Jeep as we know it from WW2 news reels, big screen movies and television shows such as M.A.S.H. or The Rat Patrol was the result of the US War Department's requirement for a light command-reconnaissance car to meet the US Army's needs under the threat of a looming European war. After only a few weeks of development the Jeep would end up in all of the Allied armies of the world courtesy of Bantam, Willys and Ford. Many of the Jeeps built during the war would go on to serve for over 60 years in various parts of the world in both military and civilian use. This book is a basic guide to building a WW2 Jeep using restored, rebuilt and modern reproduction parts for those who have never done it before, just as I hadn't either. You'll find a clear step by step process used to build a truly historical vehicle. Combined with the other books and websites that will be noted in this volume as well as some basic auto mechanical knowledge on your part you should be able to have your own piece of Jeep history rolling in no time.

Although there have been many Jeep books, this is the first complete history of the Willys-Overland passenger cars, civilian trucks (as well as civilian and military Jeeps) along with the corporation's history. Illustrated with rare and unusual factory photos and period ads, the Willys-Overland saga begins in 1903 when the Standard Wheel Company began making Overland cars. Soon after, auto dealer John North Willys was forced by circumstances to rescue the failing Overland company. By 1916 Willys had become the second-best selling car in the world. Prospering in the '20s but then bankrupt a decade later, the firm crawled back from the edge in time to win the all-important Jeep contract that ensured Willys would survive. Even after Kaiser Motors bought Willys in 1953 its products were still branded Willys until 1963 when the name was phased out. The final new Willys Jeep introduced - the Wagoneer - became a legend in its own right. Also covered are the pre-war coupes modified into high-powered racers.

The spring and summer of 1940 witnessed the resounding defeats of the French army and British Expeditionary Force at the hands of modernized German troops, designed to take advantage of the latest advances in technology. These included mobile vehicles and tanks used in formation to blast through enemy lines, as well as combined ground and air tactics. The evacuation of the British from Dunkirk and the final defeat of their French allies in June 1940 left only a thin line of English fighter planes between that island nation and total defeat.Meanwhile, leaders of the United States Army, decimated by demobilization after World War I and budget cuts during the Great Depression, knew they were completely unprepared for this new type of mobile warfare called "blitzkrieg," a German term meaning "lightning war." Though experts in the U.S. Army had worked from the end of World War I to develop a combination light weapons carrier and command and reconnaissance vehicle, no perfect model had yet been developed by 1940. In June of that same year, the Army compiled a list of requirements for a revolutionary new truck to replace the mule as the Army's primary method of moving troops and small payloads. The Original Jeeps tells the story of the American Bantam Car Company, Willys Overland-Motors, Inc. and the Ford Motor Company, the three firms who dared to meet the challenge to build pilot models of this extraordinary new vehicle. The efforts by these automotive pioneers represent an astounding story of grit, determination and never-say-die courage that inspires, and ended in the creation of a legend: the Jeep.

The definitive, fully illustrated celebration of an auto manufacturer that paved its own way by going off-road is now updated to celebrate Jeep’s 80th anniversary. Few American vehicles, or vehicles made anywhere else in the world for that matter, are as universally iconic as the Jeep. From olive drab WWII military relics to the beloved Wrangler with its rear-mounted spare tire, open-air design, and telltale roll cage, the Jeep is a true classic. In Jeep: Eight Decades from Willys to Wrangler, automotive writer Patrick R. Foster chronicles Jeep vehicle design and production from the beginning of World War II to present. Beginning with the Jeep as a crucial component of the American war fleet, Foster expertly recounts the corporate shifts, financial struggles and successes, close calls, and, above all, the enduring machines that have carried Jeep from the early 1940s to its triumphant role as a modern-day embodiment of American perseverance. More than 200 color and black-and-white historical photos and period advertisements complement his expertly written narrative of Jeep's entire history, now updated to include five years of new model editions and prototypes, its return to the pickup market, and recent stunning marketplace successes. The resulting book reminds us that sometimes the road less traveled was just waiting for the right truck.

The Battle of the Bulge, sometimes known as "Hitler's Last Desperate Gamble", was a massive German offensive beginning in December of 1944. The Allies did not believe such an offensive was possible in the thick forest of the Ardennes region. As a result, the Allies were caught completely off-guard and the German advance created a "bulge" in their lines. German defeat would result from poor logistics and Allied resolve. This defeat in the Ardennes would cripple German ability to wage war and seal the end of the Third Reich in May 1945.Instructions included in this volume are: (Germans) Schwimmwagen, SdKfz 234-2 Puma, Panzer IV L/70, Marder III ausf M, Panther Ausf , Messerschmitt Bf-109 ¿Kurfurst¿ (USA) WWII Jeep, WC56 KD Ambulance, GMC CCKW 2 1/2 Ton Cargo Truck, M3A1 Half Track, M18 Hellcat, M36 Jackson, P-51D "Blue Nose" MustangThis volume is printed on heavy-weight glossy paper with a special lay-flat spiral binding. You were born in a hospital? Hilde says as she lays down her black bread and cheese sandwich. She sits opposite me at my kitchen table. Looking up from my salad, I nod. Yes, I thought everyone by the 1940s was born in a hospital. Hell no. Hilde stares at me. In Germany I was born at home, on the couch, delivered by a midwife. Thus began the noontime conversations of an American housewife and a German cleaning lady about their contrasting lives during and after WWII. My mother taught me that an important word in any language is while. While one thing is happening, so is another. While I wash dishes, Peggy, you dry. While we are in nighttime, someone is in daylight. While one person dies, another is born. While WWII began, two little girls were born and grew up in opposing countries and living in its aftermath. With this word while, we started this book of extreme contrasts, startling discoveries and sometimes striking similarities.
