When I was a 6 y o kid, my Mama, Lulu Jack, would frustratingly send me & my siblings packing, down South to Alabama for Summer vacations. I would hop from my Grandmama Bonnie's Sun-baked, humid front porch, cross the red dirt road, without sidewalks, which is the official border County-line between Prichard Co.-to- Mobile County. I'd plop down, sweatin', meditating by the 100-year-old Great Live Oak Tree, that still stands today. I'd sit under the cool of the Oak's shade as it stood like some ancient Sentinel guarding over my best friend's crickety porch. I'd drink a cold glass of her iced water, as Miss Dane opened another imaginary book conjuring up inside her tiny head. I'd rest at her bosom, listening to the rosy stories my Oracle friend slowly brewed like hot Chili on a subzero January Winter's day.The deepest Oak roots, are also the branches...," My 100 year old best friend, MISS DANE, would tell me. 'Ms D' was an herbalist, and grand master voodoo priestess. She taught me how to use REAL ROSE MAGIC.

New Critical Approaches to the Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway

DIVWith an Overview by Paul Smith and a Checklist to Hemingway Criticism, 1975–1990 New Critical Approaches to the Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway is an all-new sequel to Benson’s highly acclaimed 1975 book, which provided the first comprehensive anthology of criticism of Ernest Hemingway’s masterful short stories. Since that time the availability of Hemingway’s papers, coupled with new critical and theoretical approaches, has enlivened and enlarged the field of American literary studies. This companion volume reflects current scholarship and draws together essays that were either published during the past decade or written for this collection. The contributors interpret a variety of individual stories from a number of different critical points of view—from a Lacanian reading of Hemingway’s “After the Storm” to a semiotic analysis of “A Very Short Story” to an historical-biographical analysis of “Old Man at the Bridge.” In identifying the short story as one of Hemingway’s principal thematic and technical tools, this volume reaffirms a focus on the short story as Hemingway’s best work. An overview essay covers Hemingway criticism published since the last volume, and the bibliographical checklist to Hemingway short fiction criticism, which covers 1975 to mid-1989, has doubled in size. The Kid Looks Back-Short Stories & Tall Tales

The Kid Looks Back is a collection of sixty-eight stories that cover a wide range of topics. I hope that his book will be a gentle hiding place where you can go to get away from something, return to something or go where you have never been. Some of these stories are true. Others are factually true, although bit embellished. Others are outright fabrications. Most look back to a kinder, mellower time. Digging for worms, swimming in a pond, using an outhouse or wading in a river may bring gross evaluations from our urbanized cousins. I hope that this book introduces them to life with a smile. Most of the stories have a message. Many are simply humorous. Entertainment is the motive. Carefree is the mood. Try to find yourself within these pages. May the beak of reality crack your comfort shell. Start anywhere. Finish anytime. Enjoy!
