Habass looked at the shattered head of his man; astonished the police were such good marksmen. For him, this was a signal to move. Without the grenade launcher, he knew it would be difficult to match the firepower of the anti riot police who out numbered them. The jeep leapt forward and out of its parking space, before tearing out on screeching tires. Smoke from its burning tires rose into the air like wisps of steam from a teacup. Isah got behind the wheel of the Toyota Liteace minibus while the others scrambled in. As the vehicle screeched out of its parking space, volleys from the concerted fire of the anti riot policemen hit it repeatedly, shattering all the glass windows, wind shields, and deflating its tires. Yelps of pain emanated from the occupants as the slugs lodged in their bodies. Having no other option, the robbers spilled unto the street once again firing wildly as they tried to make their get away on foot. It was an effort in futility.
"Most books about pension fund investing are theory. Rusty Olsons book is fact. Its a report from the frontlines of the management of pension fund assets at a time when new investment vehicles were being developed on a regular basis. Rusty and his crew at the Kodak fund were the pioneers who tried many of these new ideas, some of which flew while theirs crashed. This is a blow-by-blow account of the learning experience, the successes and failures (mostly successes), and the ultimate investment success of the Kodak fund. It should be read by anyone managing assets in a fiduciary capacity. Michael J. Clowes
This book draws on interviews carried out over a period of eight years, as well as novels, films, and domestic violence literature, to explain the role of storytelling in the history of the battered women’s movement. The author shows how cultural contexts shape how stories about domestic abuse get told, and offers critical tools for bringing psychology into discussions of group dynamics in the domestic violence field. The book enlists psychoanalytic-feminist theory to analyse storytelling practices and to re-visit four areas of tension in the movement where signs of battle fatigue have been most acute. These areas include the conflicts that emerge between the battered women’s movement and the state, the complex relationship between domestic violence and other social problems, and the question of whether woman battering is a special case that differs from other forms of social violence. The volume also looks at the tensions between groups of women within the movement, and how to address differences based on race, class or other dimensions of power. Finally, the book explores the contentious issue of how to acknowledge forms of female aggression while still preserving a gender analysis of intimate partner violence. In attending to narrative dynamics in the history of domestic violence work, Hard Knocks presents a radical re-reading of the contribution of psychology to feminist interventions and activism. The book is ideal reading for scholars, activists, advocates and policy planners involved in domestic violence, and is suitable for students of psychology, social work, sociology and criminology.
Hard Knocks: Memoir of a Small Moment is the story of one man’s dynamic journey through life from birth until the day after his twenty-first birthday. It takes place during the 1960s and 1970s on Long Island in New York. From a Latino background, he takes us through his cultural confusion, as his parents tried to assimilate within a predominantly white community, and his confrontation with overt racism at school. It details the abusive environment he faced in Catholic school, his growing anger, and his fall into childhood alcoholism and delinquency. The Vietnam War, counterculture, and science provide a constant background for his growing awareness, choices, decisions, and delusions about the world and his own life. His alcoholism merges with drug addiction and he finds value and identity within a gang. The momentum of his life, balancing precariously between rebellious destruction and a search for artistic beauty and truth, takes the reader through the criminal justice and mental health systems, where the narrator awakens to the truth of Christ in his life.
Following the lead of Boston crime-thriller writers, New York Times bestselling author and radio sensation Howie Carr delivers Hard Knocks-a hard-hitting tale of survival, betrayal, deceit, and murder...in other words, a fictional odyssey through the last thirty years of crime in Boston. Jack Reilly, a dodgy ex-Boston cop, is trying to make ends meet as a private investigator. When a client is killed, execution style, Reilly finds himself in a whole world of pain. Someone wants him dead-but why? To find out, Reilly must weed through thirty years of duplicity, corruption, and killing...a web of politicians dirtier than mobsters and criminals nobler than senators. He needs to uncover the dangerous truth behind the bribery, blood, and backdoor deals that define the highest levels of both organized crime and State House politics-before it's too late. “Hard Knocks and Consequences Too, by Fred G. Dickenson, is a folksy and practical walk down the path of life; it is about learning from personal experiences in ways that imprint upon one’s character. Fred’s devotional anthology is fun to read, and it inspires the reader to reflect a little deeper into how everyday life can teach profound spiritual lessons. Whether read as a daily devotional or as a biographical journey, it will inspire any reader. I recommend Hard Knocks and Consequences Too for any believer who desires to learn how to learn from experience.” —David Martz, EdD, author and adult educator “In Hard Knocks and Consequences Too, you are gently coaxed into mental and spiritual exercise that begins to plant principles from God’s Word, into your heart. Once you have read it, not only will more seed be planted, but you will begin to see a harvest. It will impact your life in a positive way.” —Missionary Wilson Gauntt, MEd, professor at Global University “Fred has a gift in assessing his life—past and present—with a candid approach to proving that God has a hand in everything ... and he does it with an enjoyable sense of humor and humility. I recommend both books for your personal library, as a gift to a loved one in spiritual need (or not); for church libraries and ministries; and to anyone for enjoyment and a trip down memory lane.” —Donna Gentry Weeden, 2013 president of Paradise Historical Society, Inc.; past Texas municipal court judge
Hard Knocks and Consequences is a series of vignettes taken from the life of a man who, by all rights probably shouldnt be here. As Mr. Venable said, The Good Lord must have something special in store for Freddy, cause the devil is sure nuff trying to kill him. As you read each chapter, we hope you will see Gods greater plan for us all. Every life has meaning. Finding that meaning and purpose is a major part of living. Cry with me, laugh with me, learn with me without having to attend the School of Hard Knocks -- or suffer the consequences. Like my dad said, You can learn from my mistakes or your mistakes. Which is less painful? I often wished I had learned more from his.
