Jim Harrington just inherited his Uncle's Mansion located in the country on an isolated road with a thousand acres of mostly wooded land. The closest neighbor was about two miles down the old gravel road from the farm. The mansion was pretty run down and needed a lot of work to make it livable again. Since Jim was a handy man, this was right up his alley. Jim told his wife, Fran, he would need at least the remainder of the year before they could move in. Jim really had a lot of back breaking work ahead of him, but he didn't care because when he was a little boy, his Uncle would take him hunting on the farm and about a hundred yards down a hill from the farm was a pond they fished in. Jim loved exploring through the many endless acres on the farm in search of buried treasure. Of course it was only a dream, but he didn't care, he was just a little boy like any other boy his age, with a big imagination. Jim never knew the real reason his Uncle died. The lawyer told Jim at the reading of the will that he died of a heart attack. So, Jim didn't question it, and just signed the papers, ready to take on this big responsibility ahead of him. Jim was also unaware of the mansions past. The mansion was acquired by a woman in the 1700's accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake on the very same property she was accused of practicing witchcraft. Even though Jim inherited the farm two hundred years later, many families before him have died in the mansion and on the grounds by unknown circumstances. Satanic cults have held rituals on the property undetected for many years because of the endless acres of wooded area.

In a remote part of Iceland, a boy and his friend Barður join a boat to fish for cod. A winter storm surprises them out at sea and Barður, who has forgotten his waterproof as he was too absorbed in 'Paradise Lost', succumbs to the ferocious cold and dies. Appalled by the death and by the fishermen's callous ability to set about gutting the fatal catch, the boy leaves the village, intending to return the book to its owner. The extreme hardship and danger of the journey is of little consequence to him - he has already resolved to join his friend in death. But once in the town he immerses himself in the stories and lives of its inhabitants, and decides that he cannot be with his friend just yet. Set at the turn of the twentieth century, Heaven and Hell is a perfectly formed, vivid and timeless story, lyrical in style, and as intense a reading experience as the forces of the Icelandic landscape themselves. An outstandingly moving novel.

Bail enforcement officer Jack Keller is doing a skip trace on a young woman from the right side of the tracks who somehow got involved with the wrong kind of man. But Laurel Marks’s history doesn’t matter to Jack—she’s wanted on a parole violation, and his paycheck depends on tracking her down. Meanwhile, Keller’s girlfriend, sheriff’s deputy Marie Jones, is called to the scene of a grisly murder—a gas station owner has been shot point-blank in the face, and his teenage stepson, plus the cash from the register, is missing. But something in the back of her mind tells Marie not to jump to conclusions... When a bloody, merciless killing spree starts in a church on the other side of the county, it seems impossible that Keller’s skip and Marie’s murder/kidnapping case could be related. But the local media is soon involved, and the mess they make of the situation soon reveals just what Keller, Marie, and every other peace officer in the state of North Carolina doesn’t want to believe: three people are viciously angry, incredibly well armed, and they’re ready to strike again at any time.
