A look at the culture and fanaticism of book lovers, from the beloved New York Times illustrator and creator of Incidental Comics. It’s no secret, but we are judged by our bookshelves. We learn to read at an early age, and as we grow older we shed our beloved books for new ones. But some of us surround ourselves with books. We collect them, decorate with them, are inspired by them, and treat our books as sacred objects. In this lighthearted collection of one- and two-page comics, writer-artist Grant Snider explores bookishness in all its forms, and the love of writing and reading, building on the beloved literary comics featured on his website, Incidental Comics. I Will Judge You by Your Bookshelf is the perfect gift for bookworms of all ages. “This playful, self-aware collection of strips and gags on the joys and frustrations of reading and writing is equal parts lighthearted and sincere . . . The panels range from gently clever to surprisingly profound to laugh-out-loud.” —Publishers Weekly “A prescient book for these times.” —Newsarama
A humorous, uplifting look at mindfulness, from beloved illustrator Grant Snider “Find a quiet spot away from all distraction / Listen to your breath / Watch your thoughts float past you / Forget the obligations of today / Try not to consider your eventual decay / Let yourself drift away / Arise, connected with the Earth / Awakened to the Universe.” In The Art of Living, cartoonist Grant Snider, author of The Shape of Ideas and I Will Judge You by Your Bookshelf, has created an all-new collection of one- and two-page comics that map his inner thoughts, poetic observations, and frequent failures at living mindfully. With both humor and a touch of reality, The Art of Living centers on mindfulness, but also empathy, relaxation, gratitude, and awareness—evergreen subjects that are more important and relevant now than ever. With a striking package, The Art of Living is an extension of the themes of Snider’s first two books—which explored the creative process and the love of reading—and is the perfect gift for those in a need of reflection, commiseration, hope, and a little extra self-care. Above all, Snider's cartoons will inspire and encourage a more thoughtful way of experiencing the world.
'Moving, hopeful and heartfelt... an ideal book group read' AJ Pearce A gripping and heartfelt story about overcoming the past and finding where you belong. Anna Wilson travels the world as a professional housesitter – stepping into other people’s lives - caring for their homes, pets and sometimes even neighbours. Living vicariously. But all Anna has ever really wanted is a home of her own – a proper one, filled with family and love and happy memories. If only she knew where to start. Growing up in foster care, she always envied her friends their secure and carefree lives, their certainty and confidence. And, while those same friends may have become her family of choice, Anna is still stuck in that nomadic cycle, looking for answers, trying to find the courage to put down roots and find a place to call home. Compelling, rich and evocative, Home is Anna’s journey to discovering that it isn’t where you settle down that matters, but the people you have around you when you do. ‘I loved this warm and touching story about home, belonging, and finding your way in the world. Nina Liewald analyses literary representations of so-called 'Islamic fundamentalism' by contemporary authors whose cultural background and approach to the subject matter differs substantially: Hanif Kureishi, Sebastian Faulks, Mohsin Hamid and Yasmina Khadra. The author focuses on the narrative depiction of this complex phenomenon and its economic, religious and sociopolitical framework in selected contemporary novels. The interdisciplinary study is offering contextualised readings and combining narratology, literary and cultural studies with approaches from political science. It explores the potential functions of literature in a highly politicised context and specifically the potential of literature to shed light on radicalisation processes and to promote public discourse and intercultural understanding.
Background In early 1956 Christian missionaries Roger Youderian, Nate Saint, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, and Jim Elliot lost their lives on "Palm Beach" on the banks of the Curaray River in a steamy jungle in Ecuador. They were brutally killed by an unreached tribe they had worked long and hard to reach with God's love. Many thousands of individuals have come to know Christ in a personal and living way and thousands of others have altered the direction of their lives as a result of the shocking massacre and the many articles and books written about it. Even the Auca Indians who thrust those fatal spears have seen a significant portion of their number come to know Jesus Christ. Content This unique book contains transcripts of four messages given by Jim Elliot before leaving for the mission field. The first two messages are hard-hitting straightforward talks to seventh and eighth-grade students. The first is about "Spiritual Desire" including its nature and how to increase it. The second discusses "The Effects of Sin in a Christian." The third message, entitled "Peter," is an exposition of 1 Peter 1:3. The fourth, "God's Prophet," traces the concept and role of a prophet with the primary focus being Jesus Christ, the Father's ultimate Prophet. Robert Lloyd Russell grew up in the same local church as Jim Elliot and was a friend of the Elliot family for many years. Jim was one of his childhood Sunday School teachers and there was a period of several weeks when Russell and his parents and siblings lived with the Elliots in their home. One of Jim's brothers, "Dr. Bob," officiated at Mr. Russell's wedding.

It’s a marvelous thing to know that you have the courage, discipline, and follow-through to enliven your consciousness. In this groundbreaking book, Stuart Wilde brings to light new and compelling information about the sixth sense and tells you how to develop it. He defines this sixth sense as sacred energy that taps you into the state of all-knowing. Once you discover the sixth sense/etheric point of view, it opens the energy centers in your subtle body and you take on more light, going naturally from stiff to pliant, flowing with life rather than struggling with it. Stuart tells us in Sixth Sense that "what you need is inner power, a personal charisma, a spiritual power, an extrasensory perception that makes you bigger than life. You garner that energy through compassion, kindness, introspection, and solidity." After reading this book, your perception of life in all its subtlety and vastness will reach beyond the mundane to a special level of spirituality.
