There are many devotional books available containing brief, daily inspirations that benefit all who read them. This book is different in two respects. The first is obvious: it contains two readings per day—732 in all. The second, more important difference is that the author wanted to do more than offer inspiration; this would make this book no different than so many others. The messages in the book are study sketches in that the content is not only inspirational, but also educational, challenging, and encouraging. Most of these writings were based on author Michael J. Akers’s teaching of adult Bible studies for more than thirty years and learning what really brought adults to want to deepen their knowledge and application of the Word of God.
There are several popular treatments of Buddhism's famous text, the Thirty-Seven Practices of Boddhisattvas, but this is the only one that includes personal accounts by Buddhist practitioners of the ways they have successfully used its teachings of compassion and forgiveness in their everyday lives. The book is briskly-paced and Chodron's explanations make immediate impact.

In a time when religious conservatives have placed their faith and values at the forefront of the so-called “culture wars,” this book is extremely relevant. The stories in Leaving Fundamentalism provide a personal and intimate look behind sermons, religious services, and church life, and promote an understanding of those who have been deeply involved in the conservative Christian church. These autobiographies come from within the congregations and homes of religious fundamentalists, where their highly idealized faith, in all its complexities and problems, meets the reality of everyday life. Told from the perspective of distance gained by leaving fundamentalism, each story gives the reader a snapshot of what it is like to go through the experiences, thoughts, feelings, passions, and pains that, for many of the writers, are still raw. Explaining how their lives might continue after fundamentalism, these writers offer a spiritual lifeline for others who may be questioning their faith. Foreword by Thomas Moore

It was Shirley. She was completely pale, her face a blank mask. She was sitting down in the chair behind my desk at the windows and didn't look at me when I came in from the massage room. I looked at her for a moment then quietly asked, "Shirley, please tell me what's going on." After three or four seconds of no response, I was going to say something else when Shirley slowly looked up. She didn't say anything but just looked at me. As I looked at her I wasn't sure what to make of the look on her face. Shirley's mouth opened but nothing came out of it at first. Then she said, "We are under attack from aliens." After a moment I asked, "Like from outer space aliens, Shirley?" She nodded. I listened quietly and didn't hear any explosions or sirens. Beside Shirley on the small desk was a radio. I stepped over and turned it on. Shirley had heard correctly. First-time author Richard H. Wildey is a massage therapist and energy practitioner in Charleston, West Virginia.
