The early 1960s to the mid-1970s was one of the most turbulent periods in American history. The main point, however, is that it is not enough just to serve God. Your service must be of a level of excellence. Nothing less will do. Service to God is commendable, but that is not enough. Your service must be honorable. In this way, your gifts and offerings must honor him. “Therefore the LORD, the God of Isreal, declares: ‘I promised that your house and your father’s house would minister before me forever.’ But now the LORD declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disdained’” (1 Samuel 2:30). If you cut corners in carrying out divine assignments, don’t expect the best from God. Have a big heart for God. “The temple I am going to build will be great, because our God is greater than all other gods” (2 Chronicles 2:5). For a scientist committed to empirical evaluation, it is important to show that materials can be helpful outside the context of a therapeutic relationship, so, generally speaking, we know that a book like this is likely to be helpful. Several of the specific components in this book have been tested, sometimes in a form very similar to the way you are contacting this material. For example, several studies evaluated the impact of short passages drawn nearly word for word from ACT materials (very similar to what you've read) that were recorded on audiotape, read aloud by a research assistant, or were presented to the participants to read. Typically, these studies focused on the ability of participants to tolerate distress of various kinds, such as gas-induced panic-like symptoms, extreme cold, extreme heat, or electric shock.
